Affinity V2 Vector Repeat Template

This is a basic live preview repeat pattern template for Affinity Designer V2.

The template uses symbols to create copies of your artboard which allow for a live preview of your pattern as you edit. You can duplicate and move around the preview boards to show the pattern at a larger scale or even change it to show a half-drop. 

The artboard is 4" x 4" @ 300dpi but can be changed for your own needs.

Please note: This template is for Affinity Designer V2 and will not work in V1. There are many similar accessible templates/tutorials online for V1 if you do a quick search.

How to use:

1. Locate the main artboard which you'll be working in, this is where you add your repeating elements.
2. Add in your elements as you please and you will see it repeat on the preview to the right of the main artboard.
3. If you need your elements to repeat along the edge of the artboard make sure to make a copy of that element and move it to the opposite edge. You can check if it's properly aligned by checking the preview.

Bonus tutorial:

If you have Affinity photo and work with raster images there is another way to quickly create repeats using the Affine filter. I was taught a similar technique while working with Photoshop and the process also works in Photopea (you can use either the Offset or Repeat filters).

1. Create a copy and flatten the image you want to create a repeat from. Avoid having elements of your design around/clipping off the edges to make it easier to make a clean repeat.
2. Select the image layer and locate the Affine filter under Filters > Distort > Affine...
3. Change both X and Y offset to 50% and the Extend Mode to Wrap
4. Accept and you have your repeating design and you can fill in the blank space as you see fit!
5. You can place the produced image into the Designer template to quickly check how it repeats.
